Happy Organic Month

Organic SeptemberDid you know that September is National Organic Month?

Neither did I until yesterday when a feed came up on my Facebook Page.  In this campaign, we are being asked to make small changes as if we each made a small change in what we purchase – honey, eggs, meat, vegetables, clothes, makeup, shampoo, conditioner etc, then the impact would be huge.

This is a quote from the Soil Association’s Press Release:-

“If everyone makes a small change like switching to organic milk or choosing an organic moisturiser we can make a huge difference to our planet. Organic farms support 50% more wildlife, with 30% more species -that’s more birds, bees, butterflies, beetles, bats and wildflowers. A small change can make a surprisingly large difference – the average family eats enough bread in a year that if just 12 families make the small change to swap their bread to organic, an area of organic land a quarter of the size of the Wembley Stadium football pitch would be a haven for wildlife.” (Rob Sexton, Chief Executive of Soil Association Certification)

This made me think about the things we use at home that are organic.  Food is the easiest – Chimp is still 99% organic and so most of our fruti & vegetables are organic and most of our meat too.  Chimp and Monkey both have organic milk and I usually buy organic eggs as it is easier just to have the one type in the fridge.

As all of our cleaning and bath/beauty products are through my Greenyourlife shop, then I know they are all based on natural ingredients and don’t contain the nasties like Parabens, SLS or similar.  However, not all are organic.

This got me thinking about which of our Wikaniko products are organic and in fact there are loads…..  This is an incomplete list, but a good one for starters:-

Don't wipe your face or baby with pesticide ridden cotton wool, go organic!

Don’t wipe your face or baby with pesticide ridden cotton wool, go organic!

Organic Cotton Wool – growing cotton uses lots of pesticides which can be damaging for the health of the people growing and picking cotton, as well as damaging for the wider environments in which cotton is grown.  So organic cotton wool all the way please.

FinN Organic MoisturiserFaith in Nature Products – we have recently started selling the fabulous Faith in Nature products which use organic ingredients where possible.  I have known for years about their shampoos, conditioners, shower gels and hand washes, but have only just discovered they also do deodorants and skin-care too!  So changing to any of these products gets your tick for a small change.

On the Health side of things we have

  • Organic Golden FlaxseedsOrganic Golden Flaxseeds – these are considered to have a large number of benefits for health, especially for women going through the menopause and protection against some cancers.
  • Organic Quinoa – a protein rich seed that is considered to help with dieting and detoxing.
  • A true Superfood

Organic Chia Seeds (a great superfood and because it leaves you feeling full for ages, can help people lose weight),

  • our Aloe Vera Juice Drink is made with organic Aloe Vera.  This drink is a fabulous tonic, great for boosting the immune system and aiding with many other health issues as well.
  • Organic Chocolate – now how can I include chocolate as a health food, well I can! For our chocolate at least because it contains RAW chocolate, rather than processed stuff and is also dairy free.  Yummy yummy!

Raw Chocolate & MintVanoffee Raw Chocolate

Raw Chocolate & Goji Berries

We also have the Jackson Reese organic baby wipes, organic cotton feminine care, organic air fresheners, organic argan oil, Beaming Baby organic baby lotion, shampoo & bubble bath, and organic spirulina tablets (algae to you and me).

Phew – that is quite a list.  I use quite a few of these on a regular basis, but for September I think I will try one more.  Any guesses as to which?

EU Cosmetics Directive & Wikaniko Products

Our fabulous Mineral Make-up Range will not be in production after July 2013 for a few months. So stock up now!

Our fabulous Mineral Make-up Range will not be in production after July 2013 for a few months. So stock up now!

July 11th is D-Day for many small cosmetic manufacturers as all products made after this date need to meet the new EU Directive on Cosmetic products.   Products made before the date can continue to be sold after it, but as with many other small-scale manufacturers, Wikaniko may have a hiatus in production of some of its own brand products.  In addition, the prohibitive cost of meeting the new requirements (about £500 for an exisiting product or up to £2000 for a new product) may result in some of our smaller suppliers going out of business – we hope not.

Overall it is only about 10% of the Wikaniko range of products that will be affected by this ruling and though a few products may go out of production, most will reappear – meeting all new regulations – on our ‘web-shop shelves’ in the autumn.

So, if you are a fan of any of the following products please do stock up now!  I would hate for you to run out.

Mineral Makeup – the powders and lipsticks will be affected for a short while.

Wikaniko Luxury Shampoos, Conditioners, Creams & Lotions – many of these will be affected by the new regulations, so please do stock up.

Wikaniko Organic Lip Balms – these will be affected for a few months, so again, please do stock up.

Wikaniko Bath Salts (in jars) & Bath Bombs – again, these will be affected so please stock up.

Fabulous 2-for1 offer - order yours now (June 2013)

Fabulous 2-for1 offer – order yours now (June 2013)

Wikaniko Deodorant Stones – one of our top-selling products and sadly will be affected for a while.  Please do stock up and take advantage of our great 2-4-1 offer: buy one and you will recieve 2 in your order.

A couple of products are likely to be discontinued – the bath melts & rollerballs are currently on this list.

Lastly, our own-brand range of shampoos, conditioners, shower gels & handwashes will be discontinued and replaced with equivalents from the Faith In Nature Range.  The products are very similar and price per 100ml is comparable, if not better, so this is a great deal.

I will add comments to this post as more information comes in, so please do return to check it.

Please do get in touch if you would like more information.
